About the Author
Robert Ferguson is an award-winning writer, translator, and radio dramatist. He is the author of numerous books, including The Vikings: A History, Henrik Ibsen: A New Biography, and Enigma: The Life of Knut Hamsun, nominated for the Los Angeles Times Best Biography Award and winner of the University of London J.G. Robertson Award. Born in the UK in 1948, he emigrated to Norway in 1983 and has made his home there since.

I found this book to be interesting in most places, but also a little odd. I was expecting more of a historical/cultural exploration but instead it was almost a biography/travelogue. But I learned a lot and would recommend it, especially to anyone interested in Scandinavian literature.
Very interesting, well thought out, written from the viewpoint of an Englishman living in Scandinavia.
I loved the personal narrative, conversational tone, of this book. I read it before I went to Scandinavia and found it gave me a wide-ranging view of the history and nature of Scandinavians. It debunked a lot of myths about Vikings, for example. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
Much of the text was about individuals the author came to know. It was too personal for my taste. I think the book title was misleading in that I expected the book to be about the culture of the Nordic people rather than about personal acquaintances.
This in-depth exploration of Scandinavian culture over several centuries is thoroughly researched. The content is interspersed with the British author's experiences and conversations with people in Denmark, Norway and Sweden (where he lives).
more of a personal story than a history book, save your money
Filled in a huge gap in my knowledge of Scandinavia
Worthwhile read for someone not familiar with the history of that part of Europe
