I thoroughly enjoyed both this new book and the first book of the series. The late 1890's and early 1900's were a tumultuous time in the British Empire. The Boxer Rebellion and Boer War were examples of "Queen Victoria's Little Wars" needed to hold the empire together or to add more territory. These books center at this time on the China Station where the "Great Powers" jockey for the best position to exploit the weakness of the Chinese Empress and central government. The main character is a Commander in the Royal Navy banished to the China Station for violating the excepted conduct of a naval officer. On arrival through multiple engagements he distinguishes himself and becomes involved with a wealthy debutante.Very enjoyable reading I would highly recommend to anyone. Please remember that this is a novel not an exact history so there are some literary liberties taken. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
What makes Andrew Wareham's writing so enjoyable for me to read is the look at the societal settings in which his novels take place. Shanghai Dreams takes place in the last decade of the 19th Century. The British Navy is only starting to tear away from the days of Nelson, the social scene is being increasingly populated by the burgeoning mega merchant class, and the nobility is torn between status and money. The China scene is equally fascinating. The dynasty is desperately playing sides off against each other, but each play weakens China and makes her more vulnerable. The Europeans may laugh at organization names like the Righteous and Harmonious Fists, but they would soon break upon the scene as The Boxer Rebellion against foreign influence.
The publishers recommend reading (and buying ) this series in order...and it does help to retain the suspense and to showcase the character development. The plot is linear as well. That is the way I did it. Andrew Wareham has a great narrative gift, paring down possibly 'effulgent' Victorian prose style into a thoroughly Modern, smoothly flowing variant. His storytelling is akin to the police procedural/Royal Navy version. The problems he faces in managing a ship and in deciding tactics and in issuing commands are (I believe) accurate and instructive. We are following a young rake, second son of an impoverished Scottish Earl who is a Favorite of Queen Victoria. He is sent to China following a scandal with the (experienced) daughter of an Admiral who bears a grudge. We see him as a man of independent thought, put to the service of his country. We see him as a man of well-considered action. Nothing here is 'overblown' in the telling or the plotting. HIGHLY ENTERTAINING SERIES...BOTH BOOKS. THIRD BOOK TO BE RELEASED SOON. It cannot be soon enough for the growing body of fans of this writer and this series.
Wareham's books are always very well written and adventuresome. They are, of course , in this genre, pretty easy to forecast: The hero ALWAYS WINS and wins big. Which is satisfying much of the time. And Wareham must have an awesome set of assistants helping with research, because it seems (from a distance) that his stuff--be it WW I Aviation or The China Station at the turn of the century--are deep in research and local color. My one caveat is that his books are short. Novellas, really. A little more meat on the bones--or putting two them together and selling as one, would be much more satisfactory to this Constant Reader. BB
Mr. Wareham has once again produced an absolutely awesome book and series. Shanghai Dreams is a terrific book and continues the “Earl’s Other Son†series. The characters are well developed, the action is continuous, and the story is really, really good. I’ve read everything Mr. Wareham has written, and have enjoyed each and every book. He has become one of my favorite authors. I anxiously await the next chapter in this series. Keep up the great work Mr. Wareham but please write faster.
If you enjoyed Lord Magnus in China in the first book, you should like this one even more. Some of the first book's faults are still present, particularly the "educational" dialogues, but things move along and there is an exciting battle. The series is shaping up and worth sticking with.
I'm always hesitant to start a new Wareham book. I know I'll wind up getting the whole series. This one's no different. Same Wareham formula, our hero making his way the top. It's like literary potato chips, you can't stop with just one.
Everything Wareham writes is good. It's amazing how many series he has going at once, how many books a year he is able to put out, all at a very high level. I check Amazon frequently to see if he has anything new out, and read it immediately when he does. If you are new to this author, pick any of his series, start at the beginning, and binge read.
