About the Author

Michael Williams is a writer of plays, musicals, operas and novels and the Managing Director of Cape Town Opera in South Africa. He began writing "radio plays" while studying at University of Cape Town and had his first novel published when he was twenty-five years old. He has written operas for young people based on African mythology as well as the libretti for symphonic operas that have premiered around the world. Michael is the author of several books, including the highly praised young adult novel Crocodile Burning. He finds writing fiction to be the perfect antidote to the drama of keeping an opera company alive in Africa.

Excellent book. My 13yo son loved it. It is important for our children to understand how truly fortunate they are and how hard others around the world need to fight everyday for the simple things.

Few novels exist that are set in Africa that deal with the tough issues of civil war and refugees. This is a great young adult book that opens discussions on a great number of issues that folks around the world deal with every day. Even the simple information about where is Zimbabwe and relationship to South Africa to what are the issues related to refugees and justice are presented in this novel. Personal survival is a struggle that Deo fights every day, but the reader is also pulled in with the added complexity of Innocent and Deo's commitment to his family, particularly his brother. Innocent's disability adds a component to Deo's life that shines a light on his personal development of family commitment. Quick read with plenty of action, and sadly the violence that too many people must suffer.

I read this book with a ninth grader whom I tutor. We both enjoyed it. As might be expected in a realistic novel about a civil war in Africa, the book contains some graphic violence. It is, however, a well-told and engaging tale.
