This is a great book. A truly beautiful labor of love, it is packed to the gills with photos of famous and not-so-famous record collectors, their collections, and their favorite records. Paz's photography makes his subjects jump off the page, although sometimes a little too much so. Photographs are laid one on top of the other which creates an almost disorienting effect when looking at endless pictures of piles of records. With so much to look at in every single photo, I wish Paz had laid off this technique a little and let the plain photos speak for themselves.Another area of the book that I wish was handled differently was the decision to put all of the interviews at the end of the book. I think interspersing them throughout the book would have broken up the occasional monotony that sets in from leafing through pages of pictures of records. That said, the interviews themselves are uniformly fantastic and I wish there were even more of them. From the slightly curmudgeonly Joe Bussard to the refreshingly open and unpretentious Kieran Hebdan to an account of a record hunt in Africa, they are all worth reading and worth reading slowly.If you are the type of person who, when visiting someone's house for the first time and seeing they also collect records, can't resist pawing through their collection, or who just enjoys regular trips to the used section of your favorite record store, this book is a must-buy.
This is a great book. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was because it had some pornographic images in it. Had I known that I wouldn’t have purchased it. So if that bothers you, you’ll have to censor it or not buy it. If that doesn’t bother you then you have no reason not to buy it.
It’s just a a lot of pictures of different vinyl collectors. Thought would more information on where and how to purchase vinyl records
Nothing compares to the look & feel of a hardcover edition of Dust & Grooves. I love my Kindle and would still read almost all my other books in their digital form.
