I savored every page!" -Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author"Ackerman's winning historical novel is fast-paced and rife with nonstop action, romance, and suspense."-Publishers Weekly on The Lieutenant's Nurse"Ackerman has a real talent for writing vivid descriptions and compelling characters. The reader is drawn in alongside Eva on the SS Lurline and experiences her wonder at seeing Hawaii for the first time. These beautiful scenes are sliced through as the attack begins, with the unflinching descriptions of falling bombs and wounded soldiers in the military hospital. Eva is a complex heroine, and even briefly mentioned characters are engaging and add to the story. I'm usually not a fan of romances, but I couldn't put this one down. Highly recommended." --Historical Novel Society, Editor's Choice, on The Lieutenant's Nurse"Set against the backdrop of the attack on Pearl Harbor, The Lieutenant's Nurse is an emotional and heartfelt tale of love and courage. Depicting a dramatic period in history, Ackerman's richly detailed and evocative writing transports the reader, bringing Hawaii to life." -Chanel Cleeton, USA TODAY bestselling author of Next Year in Havana"Ackerman writes about WWII Hawaii with vivid detail, wit, and a sense of place evocative of Kristin Hannah. She re-examines history with a provocative, nuanced and immersive narrative that is impossible to put down. Simply put, The Lieutenant's Nurse is a fantastic and enthralling read." -Emily Strelow, author of The Wild Birds"With the wit and richness of a Beatriz Williams novel, The Lieutenant's Nurse weaves a tale of love and courage. With a sensitive touch and an instinct for authenticity, Ackerman depicts the fraught nature of wartime relationships... mixes romance, suspense and history into a bittersweet story of cinematic proportions."-BookPage on Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers"Strong female friendships and an unusual World War II home front setting add to this debut novel's appeal for historical fiction fans." -Library Journal on Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers"A unique portrait of WWII... Ackerman's clear prose delineates how the ignorance that ran rampant could be healed by love. It's hard to beat that combination." –Cooperstown Crier"Set in Hawaii during World War II, the home front is maintained by women struggling to feed their families while maintaining equilibrium amidst racism and scarcity. This is merely a backdrop, however, for a mystery and a romance, as Violet provides for her daughter while hoping to learn the fate of her missing husband. Ackerman creates a time and place that ring true." -The Christian Science Monitor on Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers

What a great read! I loved Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers, and was worried that Sara Ackerman's second book wouldn't measure up, but I think The Lieutenant's Nurse was even better! Great characters, great setting, great story and I was one hundred percent hooked the whole way through. All the little snippets of info leading up to the attack also really added a whole new angle that I had never known about. Now I have a book hangover!
Excellent historical setting with WWII intrigue. Well developed characters and code breaking and medical settings at Pearl Harbor. Thoroughly enjoyable read.
"The Lieutenant’s Nurse" is Sara Ackerman’s second novel set in Hawaii during WWII. I really enjoyed it. She does a great job describing the atmosphere in Hawaii leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor as well as the chaos following the bombing and the aftermath. This novel combines intrigue, a love story, and a glimpse into the experience of a nurse serving in Hawaii during the war.
I’m surprised more books aren’t written about the attack on Pearl Harbor from the civilian view. This gave a bit of the confusion and fear as well as delves into behaviors of the time concerning the way women were treated.
This portrayal of the attack on the Pearl Harbor kept me interested throughout. Sara Ackerman's blend of fiction with actual events in history proved illuminating. Her characters were interesting, bold, and impactful. The romance of the story went a bit awry for me in the middle and I was surprised at the twists it took. The beginning held a forbidden, mysterious element between the two main characters that was quite good and then it tapered off losing some of that lovely romantic element. Once the characters arrived in Hawaii the romance became muddled and the chemistry between the two was lost. Despite this, the journey of this female lead was admirable and intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the woman she is, the risks she's willing to take, and the values in which she believes. In a terrifying time of much despair and uncertainty the bravery Ackerman portrays through her female characters is uplifting and unmatched. As strength's are tested, Ackerman relies heavily on the fortitude of the brave nurses during this time and punctuates that bravery with one woman who refuses to be tested. For that aspect alone, the story was a winner for me. The story gets detailed and a lot of characters come and go but overall I enjoyed this piece of historical fiction.
Set in Hawaii right before and during the Peal Harbor attack, this novel moves quickly and keeps your interest. The heroine, Eva, is a nurse bound for Hawaii on a cruise ship when she meets a handsome naval officer. Eva has run away from a scandal in her hometown and hopes to start a new life with her boyfriend, who is stationed in the Pacific. The naval officer she meets introduces many complications, both in her relationship with her boyfriend and with her sense of wellbeing. Did the higher ups in the military know about the imminent attack on Pearl Harbor? This novel explores that question.I really liked this novel and read it very quickly. However, the last third of the book had a few too many things going on with the plot. I could have done without the backstory or the subplot involving the therapy dog. Overall, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and give it 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.
