Whew!!! What an incredible, incredible story!!! The title of this book, Inconceivable, is perfect.....because it's hard to even conceive that something like this could happen.....but happen it did....and Sean and Carolyn's life would never be the same again. Their quest for a fourth child through IVF came about......with one problem....the embryo their doctor implanted was not theirs. Thus begins their heartbreaking journey down a path they never in a million years could have imagined.Having struggled with infertility for years, the couple decided to try for their fourth child utilizing IVF. Their third child had been successfully conceived through IVF.....so they went back to the same doctor who had successfully helped them conceive in the past. Carolyn was getting up there in years and had suffered 4 miscarriages in the past. The past pregnancies had taken a serious toll on her body and they knew this was pretty much her last hope to have their long desired fourth child. Very quickly they were told that the procedure had been a success.....only a mix up at the clinic had left them pregnant with another couple's embryo. Imagine the shock!!!!!Their doctor was rightfully horrified and advised them they should have an abortion. The couple immediately rejected this idea....as they were Catholics and didn't believe in abortion. They, also couldn't imagine killing the child of the other couple. With breaking hearts....they made the courageous decision to have this baby and turn it over to the couple who were the genetic parents. Even though they were doing the right thing....they struggled mightily and felt pain in ways most of us thankfully never will.Although they knew the child growing in Carolyn was not genetically theirs....they couldn't help but fall in love with this precious life growing inside of them. They saw this little life as their baby and came to love it just as they would their own.The chapters go back and forth from Carolyn to Sean....with each of them sharing their thoughts, feelings, heartache, pain, and fears. It was really nice hearing from both of them and seeing how it affected them. Their incredible pain can be felt throughout each page of this book. They struggle with knowing that this innocent baby they've fallen in love with....Will have to be turned over shortly after entering the world.I have the utmost respect for this couple. When faced with shocking, heartbreaking circumstances....they stood by their beliefs and chose to give this child life. They didn't turn away from their religious beliefs...even when it caused them pain. I doubt many people would have made the same selfless sacrifice. After reading this book, I read where this exact same thing had happened several times in Europe. In every story I read, the woman decided to abort the other couple's embryo. Not Carolyn and Sean. They chose to sacrifice enormously to stand by their convictions and give another couple the greatest gift imaginable. Even with all the risks involved....They still chose life for this precious baby. They made this sacrifice even knowing that it would probably cost them the chance of having their fourth child they had longed for. Carolyn's doctor had already told her that this would be her last pregnancy due to previous serious complications during pregnancy. She willingly chose to take this risk in order to give this baby life. What greater sacrifice can one give for another? This beautiful couple brings you along on their painful journey.....it's raw....it's real....the pain is brutal. Yet, their faith in God and love for one another shines through the pages of this book. I highly recommend this book.....It shows how God can bring you through the deepest pain...the blackest night.....after you finish reading it....look them up on the internet....and you'll see what has happened in the years since....that God ultimately brought them beauty for ashes!!!!!
Very Well expressed feelings. So heart felt. So relatable. Everyone worst nightmare. I have great admiration for the people involved. There is a special place in heaven for such good people. Doing the right thing sometimes is very hard. They did not take the easy way out. I hope they get to have more access to Logan if it is in his best interest. Very special story.
While there were parts of this book I really felt for Carolyn & her family, there were a lot of parts written with zero emotion or like an outsider had written it. While the whole ordeal was truly heartbreaking, I find it really hypocritical that Carolyn went through this horrible experience carrying a baby she KNEW she would have to give up at birth, but maintained she was a Christian. Somehow it wasn't "God's plan." She was traumatized & had PTSD, yet the Christian belief is that ANY woman who gets pregnant & doesn't want to keep their baby should be forced to go through this. I find that a little hard to swallow.
I could not put this book down. It gripped my heart as a mom and I felt like I had a front row seat to this unfolding life-altering drama. The choices made by this couple were rooted in their belief that God required them to do the right thing. Additionally they tried to see these events through the eyes of the baby's biological parents while feeling connected to this new wonderful life growing in the womb. They have done the seemingly impossible, giving this incredible gift of life knowing that their grief over the loss would know no end.
The medical mistake that made Carolyn Savage pregnant with a baby that was not hers genetically did not remove her maternal love for this miracle baby that she had to hand over to his genetic parents almost immediately after his birth. After giving birth to two sons, Carolyn Savage has many complications in her quest to have a third baby that her and her husband Sean desperately want. After several years and attempts to get and stay pregnant, they give birth to a beautiful baby girl with help from IVF. Knowing that time is running out as Carolyn approaches 40, they decide to implant the embryos they had frozen with their previous IVF. The wrong embryos are implanted and Carolyn is pregnant with another couples' baby. The strength this couple shows in this devastating situation has got to be heaven sent! They bare their souls in this captivating, emotional book. You feel their pain. They face this as a united couple, despite even their own religion turning its back on them. A great book that just might show us all how to have some grace and empathy for people, and that horrible is mistakes do not have to make you bitter and hard.
This story really touched my heart and to see how a husband and wife could give the ultimate gift to another couple. A major medical mistake changed the lives of two entire families. The way it was handled by this very loving and mature couple was astonishingly. Very good read, hard to put down.
This book was an excellent read. It gave a window into the souls of Carolyn and Sean. It left the reader feeling as if we were traveling their painful journey along side them.
I love the way I felt when reading this book. At times I felt that we were sitting there chatting and the family as pouring their heart out to me. I put myself in their situation and felt their pain. Much could have been eliminated as there delete times that it dragged on and on but I do think that this is a story that needed to be told and I an surprised that a movie was not made from this story.
