This is another good entry in the Young Sherlock Holmes series. It does well in adding to Sherlock's past and adding tidbits that tie into the canon Holmes. It is a little weaker than Death Cloud, in my opinion. While I loved Sherlock discovering more about the United States, the Big Villain seemed more Bond-esque than what I expected in a Sherlock Holmes story. Still, in the heat of the reading, I accepted it and moved on, so it does work. It is only afterward that I thought, "What?"Of all the passages in the book, I think I settled on this one as being my favorite:I think there’s always danger, wherever you go. You can either ignore it, or you can wrap yourself in blankets so it doesn’t hurt you, or you can walk towards it and dare it to do its worst. If you do the first thing, then the danger takes you by surprise. If you do the second thing, then you spend all your time swaddled up in the dark, letting the world pass you by. The only logical course of action is to go towards the danger. The more you get used to it, the better you can deal with it.If you like Sherlock Holmes, start with Death Cloud and then read this book.
It's to a point where I feel I could start writing the reviews for Mr Lane's books prior to purchasing them. Readers can count nonstop action, excitement and taut well-presented plots and bewilderment wrapped into one. One caution to new readers: Read the books in order as one ties into the others to follow. Otherwise, you can expect the very best from Mr Lane's Sherlock Holmes and John Watson stories.
My grandson is in 5th grade and has a lexile reading level of 900+. Using the website lexile.com I was able to find this book for him. We both read it independently and then had fun discussing it as he prepared his presentation for school. I was not that familiar with Sherlock Holmes and this book has gotten me hooked on the two shows on TV. I enjoyed it because of the background it gives on the adult Sherlock and my grandson enjoyed it because it had enough action for a ten year old.
Andrew Lane's second book about 14-yr-old Sherlock Holmes takes off from the 1st page and never lets the reader down. Sherlock stumbles upon John Wilkes Booth in an abandoned farmhouse in England. He is being used as a ploy in a plot against the American government. Amyus Crowe, Sherlock's tutor, his daughter, and Sherlock follow these rebels across the Atlantic and right into intrigue. Highly recommended.
Great series my 12 y/o loves it. A little below his reading level
Good read.
These are as good as the original stories; in some cases more acessible. I've read or listened to them all. There are supposed to be more.
Only giving 4 since I haven't read it but my 2 boys (11&13) loved these books.
