If you're reading this, you've probably seen one of those studies that says creating art boosts your child's language development, or maybe heard a story on the radio talking about how engaging your children with art can give them the critical thinking skills they need to thrive in our visual world. And you probably thought, "How am I going to do that? I'm not an artist!"   Well, I'm not either.    Much to my surprise, that didn't matter. It turns out even artistically inept parents can use public art to engage their children with the world around them. Let me tell you how.Â

A charming, practical, thought-provoking book. This book made me think about public art in whole new ways -- and appreciate those organizations and artists who make public art happen. Learning happens via conversations and this book steers you towards the conversations that will spark a child's curiosity and wondering. We want this kind of experience to happen to children everywhere -- and this book succeeds in carrying us forward towards that goal. Do your part so that the conversations described in this book become the norm, rather than the exception.

I love how it reminds us of simple pleasures we can have with our kids by just slowing down, enjoying the moment and taking notice of art around us. It is simple, practical, inexpensive and doable. Shala suggests good questions one can ask their child about artwork such as statues in parks. She also reminders that kids have their own timing and attention spans to consider. I liked how Shala gave suggestions for follow up art and writing activities that one can do later at home with their kids after a park visit. Enjoyable read. Thanks! Lorie E.

This is an excellent book on enjoying public art displays with your child (or even for yourself). Many great tips on spending quality time together while enjoying public art and the outdoors. The book also gives helpful advice on encouraging your child’s creativity. The author’s interviews with the artists were interesting as well. I appreciated that the author’s is writing from personal experiences and provides a realistic example of viewing and interacting with public art as a family.

I am, perhaps, the least artistic person in the Northern Hemipshere. But I've been looking for ways to keep my child engaged in the world and interested in art -- and I found this to be really useful for that. It's an amazingly approachable set of tools and tips for using public art in small chunks as a prompt for getting your child thinking and doing art. It's also a beautiful book. (One note: I've been a fan of the author's blog Caterpickles for several years -- there's a *ton* of new material in this book.)

As a mom of three girls, I haven’t thought about making public art something to go explore...until now. I’ll be using these tips as a way to make the most of our first public art experience. Definitely a better alternative to museum gift shops!

Love this book. It is beautifully laid out, the language is engaging, and has very good pointers not just about how to engage children through the specific medium of public art but also about golden parenting rules. I have some new tricks under my belt for my own 6 year old now. Buy this, you won't regret!

This book was written by my niece and I strongly recommend it to all parents. It's an easy and enjoyable way to appreciate local art with children.Image may contain: one or more people, stripes and text

I found this to be a valuable resource for introducing children to the fine arts. Ms. Howell makes something that kids tend to find tedious exciting. I can't wait for her next works. Highly recommended!
