I've discovered Acton Academy in the final days of 2015. And I devoured the few blogs, and there were stories. It took almost one full month, full time, to digest everything. There were just too much insights and writings, accumulated over 7+ years. With Courage to Grow, you get the entire experience in a packed and condensed format, without sacrificing any highlights or the intentions of Acton Academy's mission.Laura has pen her heart out. You will discover the stories of a unique place for Children. You will discover the true struggles of trust and faith. You will be delighted by the vision and most importantly, the love that binds all action.Warning. Read with curiosity. Read with courage. Read with caution. Because you might just start an Acton Academy in your community.
A fascinating read about a school and a couple that are turning the educational world on it's head. The book chronicles the struggles of a couple dealing with the responsibility of educating their own children. Faced with no acceptable conventional options, they decided to build their own school based on the Socratic method. By removing the traditional teacher and corresponding right/wrong answer mentality, the kids are forced to struggle immensely through difficult scenarios but these struggles force them to learn things for themselves rather than being spoon fed via a traditional curriculum. An interesting aside, these kids write contracts that they all agree to adhere to and enforce themselves removing the traditional role of the disciplinarian in academia. This book is a testament to the creativity and fortitude of children when given the proper environment in which to flourish. A must read for anyone with a vested interest in the education of youth and an interesting read for anyone interested how the human mind learns.
There are many books on my family’s bookshelf that relate to the kind of education and training we want for our kids as they mature into independent adults. Courage to Grow by Laura Sandefer will be at the top of the pile.Laura captures the essence of the Acton Academy system she and her husband, Jeff Sandefer, founded in Austin, Texas, in 2009. My wife and I have firsthand experience as we have two daughters at the school and have been active members of the Acton Academy community since 2011.Courage to Grow is more than a journey of an educator who has founded a radically innovative school. It is a deep dive into the rationale and day-to-day operations of a groundbreaking educational environment. Laura provides the playbook for this education system and rationale behind it. We understand the inspiration for this new system of learning from past to current luminaries such as Socrates, Thomas Jefferson, Maria Montessori, Sugata Mitra, and Sal Khan. The book reveals what systems have been shown to work and why “Learning by Doing†is a critical part of Acton’s educational experience. I strongly recommend reading Courage to Grow to anyone interested in understanding what drives parents to an educational environment where their children are inspired to pursue their “hero's journey.â€
In "Courage to Grow: How Acton Academy Turns Learning Upside Down" Laura Sandefer gracefully takes you through the journey of her family and the brave others that joined them to form a team of smart, loving and dedicated people and create an educational system where the inherent strengths of children are empowered to do amazing things. A smart read that balances honest analysis with compassion, candor and humor to make any reader contemplate where our children spend 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year for 12 years in pursuit of education that will shape the rest of their lives. If wondering where the hero's of future generations will come from to champion our environment, responsibly govern our people and ethically grow our economies keeps you awake at night, stay up reading Laura Sandefer's book tonight. You'll sleep better tomorrow!
